Davy
Jones left home to become a jockey. While
he was an apprentice, he got into acting and quickly got a role in “Peter
Pan.” He appeared in several
more plays before landing the role of the Artful Dodger in Oliver!
He crossed the Atlantic with the production to star on Broadway.
The show was such a hit that the cast, featuring Davy, appeared on
the Ed Sullivan Show. It
happened to be the same night the Beatles made their first appearance on the
Sullivan show.
Fresh
from his Broadway success, Davy hit Hollywood and was cast as the “cute
one” in the Monkees. With the
pre-fab four, Davy did 58 episodes of the Monkees TV show, recoreded nine
albums, did a TV special and a movie before the Monkees came to an end in
the early seventies. In the
mid-seventies, Davy and Micky joined with Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart, the
songwriters behind many of the Monkees hits, to do an album and tour.
Davy has gone on to perform in more
plays including "The Real Live Brady Bunch" and
"Oliver!" (again) and has also fulfilled his dream of becoming a
jockey. He rejoined the Monkees for touring from 1986-89 and 1996-97.
